18th Ward Map - City Ward Map

A long time member of the 18th Ward Democratic Organization, Derrick Curtis was appointed Ward Streets and Sanitation Superintendent by Ald. Lona Lane and then in 2012, she stepped down as Ward Democratic Committeeman to let Curtis run unopposed. Lane, who owed her 2006 appointment to Mayor Richard M. Daley, tended to lean hard on Mayoral support come re-election time. But a falling out between her and Curtis led him to challenge her for Alderman in 2015. Curtis, an LSC member, little league coach and general neighborhood volunteer, had strong local name identity and a strong volunteer base. It seemed like a done deal from the beginning; Emanuel declined to help Lane and Curtis cruised to victory in the general election.

A congenial person with a strong neighborhood focus, Curtis has made it clear that he’s happy to work with any mayor, so long as he’s the 18th Ward alderman.
