A former sociologist who worked in Africa for a time, Mattie Hunter was a Chicago Housing Authority staffer when she was appointed to replace Margaret Smith, the "Lady of the Senate", after she retired mid-term due to health issues. Backed by then-Ald. Dorothy Tillman, who lost her seat in 2007, Hunter has since sailed through elections unchallenged in Democratic primaries.
