Chicago, 23rd Ward Alderman (2018-)
Illinois, State Representative (2013-2018)
Elected to an open seat to the Illinois House created by redistricting in 2012, Tabares was the former editor of Extra, a West Side bilingual newspaper prior to entering politics. But she started out with help from the beginning, obtaining the support of United Neighborhood Organization leader Juan Rangel and Ald. Edward Burke for her first run. Her first campaign, against progressive activist Rudy Lozano, Jr. ended up with her edging out Lozano 52-48%.
A faithful ally of House Speaker Michael Madigan, Tabares was tapped by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in June of 2018 to replace retiring Aviation Committee Chair Michael R. Zalewski. Her appointment reflected the changing demographics of the Southwest Side ward and gave her a leg up before the 2019 election.
She is a graduate of Daley College and has a degree in broadcast journalism from Columbia College.
