Chicago, 47th Ward Alderman (2011-)

47th Ward Map - City Ward Map

Ameya Pawar, rocketed to a surprise victory in 2011 by defeating former 47th Ward Ald. Eugene Schulter's candidate, Tom O’Donnell through an old fashioned shoe leather effort. Since then, the former Northwestern University employee, who counts Mayor Rahm Emanuel as one of his constituents, has stuck to a steady course of lots of neighborhood meetings and a laser focus on improving neighborhood public schools. He is the first Asian-American elected to City Council.

While Pawar has made some good government noise now and then, he has seldom publicly opposed the Mayor on big issues and instead chooses to work behind the scenes of City Council.

In 2017, Pawar announced his candidacy for the Democratic governor primary. While not a leading candidate, Pawar has energized some of the "Bernie Left", attracting supporters of former Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. While Pawar's campaign has had trouble catching fire statewide, it has helped to boost his name ID and campaign account, which could be useful if Pawar decided to run for mayor in 2019.

Pawar, who during his first campaign pledged to only serve two terms, has also declined to seek the Ward Democratic Committeeman seat.

Besides the mayor, his ward is filled with some of the city's most powerful, including Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool.
