Journal Musings: Sometimes You Have to be Your Own Detective!

As I write these posts — in a "Notepad" document — I am not even sure they are going to go anywhere.

Our Internet is on the fritz again...

I find it ironic that we sit here in one of the most technologically advanced places in the world, and yet we have to have technicians and repair people out to look at our connection about 5-6 times a year. It doesn't seem like it was even very long ago I last wrote about this issue.

Although I did talk to our provider's tech support department on Saturday — twice, actually — they did the usual thing they do when they can't get a system to work: They scheduled a technician to come out and look at it. Supposedly, that technician will be here this afternoon (Tuesday), for whatever good that may do.

Since then, our Internet has been on and off regularly, but most of the time it just slows to a crawl that reminds me of the old days of dial-up service.

In the meantime, I have been trying to understand why our serve is so sketchy... and it turns out that it really isn't our service that's having issues, it's our entire street that is having issues.

I belong to this nifty online community called NextDoor which is a bit like social media for your neighborhood. It didn't take very long to work out that seven households were having the exact same issues, at the exact same time... issues the provider seems to think are related to our individual equipment rather than their lines.

And those are only the households we know about... since roughly 45% of the homes in our area are plugged into the NextDoor service.

Meanwhile, there's the irony of the cable company (who provides our Internet service) constantly advertising their "package deals" into one: Internet + Phone + Premium TV all in one nifty package.

A "nifty package" — I might add — that just can't quite seem to keep the service running all the time... so what if it were an emergency and we had to dial out? Or what if we just had to call tech support... on the same line that's NOT WORKING?

Meanwhile, we live in an area that doesn't have very good mobile coverage, meaning that I am now sitting here waiting for the technician to call and let us know he's on his way (As per usual, their best time estimate was "between noon and 4:00pm) on my cellphone, which is floating somewhere between one and two bars.

Silly me... I thought all this technology as here to make our lives easier!

Thanks for reading and have a great (and hopefully connected!) day!
