Onions belong to the family of Allium plants.This family also consist of leeks,chives and garlic.They have characteristics of pungent (strong odor) flavors and some medicinal properties.
       This vegetable (onions) varies in shape,color,size,and flavor.Yellow,red,and white are the most common types of color of onions.The taste of this vegetable ranges from sweet and juicy to sharp,spicy, and pungent(strong odor), often depending on the season in which people grow and consume them.
      Allium vegetables have been cultivated by farmers for centuries. And according to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations,China is said to be the biggest producer of onions worldwide.


   Onions is seen by many people as just an ingredient for spicing up food,it is more to just spicing as it comes with some health benefits like reducing of risk related to cancer(s),helps in maintaining the hair and skin health.
      Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2019 study had a comparison between 833 people living with Colorectal Cancer and 833 living without the disease. It was discovered that the risk of living with Colorectal Cancer was 79% lower in people that often consume onions (allium vegetable). An adult recommended/approved daily dosage of one cup of chopped onions provides nothing less than 13.11% of vitamin c. Onions as an antioxidant(group of vitamins that act against the effects of free radicals),it helps in fighting the formation of free radical compounds that have links/connections to cancer.
        In the year 2015, a general relationship between a high consumption of allium vegetables and a low risk of cancer was reviewed,most especially the cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and stomach. But it is yet to be certain on the amount to be consumed to get the maximum benefit of allium vegetable consumption and reduced cancer risk. Looking into this,more research has to be carried out in order to know the compound(s) which have protective effects against cancer in onions.
